Position Summary:
The general surgery staff nurse provides support to the general surgery physicians and nurse practitioners throughout a variety of clinical, diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventative health areas. The general surgery nurse will assist in outpatient surgery clinics under the direct supervision and support of a staff surgeon and/or nurse practitioner. He/she will assist with selective diagnostic test and procedures. This nurse will establish and maintain collaborative and communicative relationships within the general surgery and other clinical ancillary or administrative services within or outside VA Eastern Colorado Health Care System (VA ECHCS). The general surgery nurse ensures and enhances the quality of services provided to General Surgery patients and their significant others.

Hours: Monday - Friday, 7:30 - 4:00

KEY REQUIREMENTS

U.S. Citizenship

Full unrestricted Licensure, Certification, or Registration required.

Must pass pre-employment examination.

Designated and/or Random Drug Testing required.

Background and/or Security Investigation required.

English Language Proficiency required.

DUTIES:
Duties include, but not limited to:
1. Clinic Support:
Devoted time to clinic management and support as needed, including telephone responses to questions adn requests form patients

Reviews and screens referrals for consultation

Schedules and coordinates procedures and clinic visits

2. Minor Procedure Clinic:
Assists general surgeons in performing minor procedures

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Qualifications:
(1) Citizen or national of the United States

(2) English Language Proficiency: If you are appointed to a direct patient care position, you must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402 (d) and 7407 (d).

(3) Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the U.S. or in the District of Columbia.

(4) Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State agency and accredited by the National League of Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

(5) Applicants must possess one of the following degrees in nursing to be consider for this position. Associate Degree or Diploma in Nursing; or Bachelor's Degree in Nursing; or enrolled in a Bridge or Master's Entry Program to Nursing (MEPN) program AND have received a certificate of professional nursing to sit for the National Certification Licensing Examination (NCLEX) and can submit this certification to the Department of Veterans Affairs; or Master's Degree in Nursing; or Doctoral Degree in Nursing.

Applicant's education and length of nursing practice (experience) will be considered by a Nurse Professional Standards Board in determining the grade and salary of the applicant selected. Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel. The criteria are as follows: Practice: practice, ethics and resource utilization, Professional Development: performance, education/career development, Collaboration; collaboration, collegiality, Scientific Inquiry: quality of care, research.

Education/Experience Requirements:
Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, no experience.

Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field and no experience; or a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) and no experience.

Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of experience; or a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of experience, or a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no experience.

Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of experience, or ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years experience or a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years experience, or a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no experience.

Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years experience or Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 years experience.

DESIRABLE FACTORS:
BSN preferred

Five years clinical general/day of surgery experience, preferred

Two years clinical experience in a surgery subspecialty, preferred

Two years computer experience with Excel and Word
