About the Division of Youth Corrections: The Division of Youth Corrections (DYC) provides a continuum of residential and non-residential services that encompass juvenile detention, commitment and parole. DYC is the agency statutorily mandated to provide for the care and supervision of youth committed by the District Court to the custody of the Colorado Department of Human Services. The Division operates ten secure facilities that serve youth between the ages of 10 and 21, who are pre-adju! dicated, sentenced, or committed. The Division also contracts ! with numerous private residential and non-residential service providers throughout the State. For pre-adjudicated youth, the Division is also responsible for the management and oversight of Senate Bill 91-94; a State-funded, locally administered program that provides services to youth at risk of further progressing into the juvenile justice system. In addition to residential programming, the Division administers juvenile parole services throughout the State.

Division of Youth Corrections Mission: It is the mission of the Division of Youth Corrections to protect, restore and improve public safety through a continuum of services and programs that: Effectively supervise juvenile offenders, promote offender accountability to victims and communities, and build skills and competencies of youth to become responsible citizens. Gilliam Youth Services Center (GYSC) is one of the Division of Youth Corrections (DYC) state-owned and operated detention facilities. GYSC is a 64-bed facility that provides secure detention services located in the Central Region of Colorado. The facility serves the 2nd Judicial District encompassing Denver County. Male and female youth reside in the facility.

Description of Job:
This position plans and coordinates basic nursing care to the adolescent residents. The position provides skilled and professional level of health care within the RN scope of practice. Administers medications and provide treatments as prescribed by Mid-Level Providers and Physicians. Assess and evaluate the effectiveness of the care given.

Specific Duties Include:
Organize, supervis! e, implement and evaluate the direct and indirect health care of reside! nts in an adolescent correctional facility.
Monitor residents’ safety, i.e., monitor environmental hazards and personal safety needs based on residents’ unique and changing physical and mental status.
Administer medications and treatment (including responsibility for IV administration and venipuncture according to Mid-Level Providers and Physicians orders, and State regulations.
Facilitate communications of residents’ changing health status and needs to residents, families, Mid-Level Providers, Physicians, supervisors, and the multidisciplinary team.
Assess residents’ physical, mental and psychosocial status, in regard to chronic or acute signs or symptoms utilizing the nursing process.
Document residents’ total health status, administration of care, and assessment of needs in relationship to the Treatment Care Plan, and documents necessary and pertinent information required by DYC, State, and Federal rules and regulations.
Attend education! al workshops and in-services to maintain currency on changing products, methods, laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions and Conditions of Employment:

The Colorado Constitution, Article XII, Section 13 requires that applicants for state classified government jobs be residents of Colorado.

Minimum Qualifications:
A copy of a valid Registered Nurse License from the State of Colorado or any State participating in the Nurse Licensure Compact.

NOTE: Nurse Graduates are eligible to apply for this position as long as they have taken and successfully passed their nursing boards.

  • Ability to work in collaborative relationships with other professionals to achieve interdisciplinary goals set for the client,
  • Ability to assess and coordinate community health care services to meet the needs of clients and their families,

  • Ability to keep own emotions under control and restrain negative behaviors when provoked or when working under conditions of stress.
