Essential Functions:

  • Functions as an ophthalmology team member, collaborates, & demonstrates positive interpersonal relationships w/ physicians, circulating nurse, central supply staff, & other health care/support staff in the preoperative arena
  • Accurately identifies & sets up ophthalmology equipment, instruments, & supplies necessary for each surgical procedure based on assessment of need using appropriate resources, such as physician preference card, departmental routine, and/or standards of care (AORN standards) in a timely manner to meet the demands of the surgery schedule
  • Sets up & maintains a sterile field in preparatio! n for surgical procedure & during delivery of instruments, equ! ipment & supplies to surgeon intraoperatively, by demonstrating competency in the principles of surgical had scrubbing, aseptic technique & sterilization
  • Immediately reports & corrects break in technique
  • Anticipates physician, surgical team, & patient needs throughout procedure & adapts to changes quickly & effectively, including emergency responses
  • Utilizes universal precautions appropriately
  • Endures appropriate safety measures taken for the patient, including but not limited to accurate sponge, sharps, & instrument counts, handling of specimens, proper use/handling of implants; use of electrocautery; use of lasers, verification, labeling & handling of medications/ irrigation fluids & reports time & appropriate dosages/amounts of administration to circulator, proper & safe use of all electrical devices & equipment; appropriate positioning of patient, safe moving & transporting of patients, & safe & appropriate use of ophthalmologic surgi! cal instruments & equipment, (use of microscope, use of phaco machine and vitrector),
  • Identifies & immediately intervenes w/ the use of any malfunctioning equipment & promptly isolates & labels equipment & reports it to the appropriate person
  • Continuously update physician preference card; assists w/ & expedites room set up & clean up, assists w/ patient care activities & other duties as assigned
  • Scrubs for other specialties as assigned
  • In addition to defined technical requirements, accountable for consistently demonstrating service behaviors & principles defined by the Kaiser Permanente Service Quality Credo, the KP Mission as well as specific departmental/organizational initiatives
  • Also accountable for consistently demonstrating the knowledge, skills, abilities, & behaviors necessary to provide superior & culturally sensitive service to each other, to our members, & to purchasers, contracted providers & vendors
Qualif! ications

Basic Qualifications:
  • Minimum of ! 1 year of experience in a hospital or ambulatory surgery operating room demonstrated competency w/Ophthalmology equipment, technology & procedures & registered w/the State of Colorado as a Surgical Technician
  • HS graduate or equivalent
  • Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technician program
  • Must complete Basic Life Support & Surgical or Scrub Technician certification within 6 months from date of hire
  • Demonstrated competency w/ Ophthalmology equipment, technology & procedures
  • Demonstrated customer service skills, customer focus abilities & the ability to understand KP customer needs
May rotate between facilities as needed
