DUTIES:
The primary function of this position is to lead Operating Room Nursing Assistants and assist surgeons or nurses by performing "scrub" technician duties.

Perform paraprofessional duties in support of the OR Services Flight by providing support for surgical procedures ranging from routine (e.g., appendectomy, myringotomy, herniorraphy, etc) to complex high risk (orthopedics, colectomy, or on call procedures).

Perform ancillary duties in support of the surgical schedule.

Perform post-operative cleaning and stocking of the operating room.

Perform as a circulator/Center Core Float.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
To qualify for this position, you must have one of the following:

Have at least 1 year of specialized experience that is equivalent to at least the GS-04 level in the Federal Service (or similar in other pay systems). This experience includes: Assisting surgeons and registered nurses in operating room activities, including passing instruments, maintaining sterile conditions, and draping and positioning patients.

OR

Have completed a 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in medical or health technician related fields. NOTE: YOU MUST SUBMIT COPIES OF YOUR TRANSCRIPTS/ UNOFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS ARE ACCEPTED AT THIS PHASE OF THE RECRUITMENT PROCESS.

OR

Have a combination of experience and education; i.e., some specialized experience as described in A, and some of the education as described in B. To compute the percentage, first determine your total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required. Then, determine your education as a percentage of the education required. Combine the two percentages. The total must equal at least 100 percent. NOTE: YOU MUST SUBMIT COPIES OF YOUR TRANSCRIPTS/UNOFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS ARE ACCEPTED AT THIS PHASE OF THE RECRUITMENT PROCESS.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:

Knowledge of fundamentals of anatomy and physiology, sterilization procedures, aseptic technique, operating room procedures, nomenclature, care and use of surgical instruments and equipment, preparation of instrument sets, and basic medical supply procedures.

Knowledge of perioperative nursing care appropriate for infants, toddlers, preschool age children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients.

Knowledge and skill to perform minor repairs on malfunctioning equipment.

Knowledge of supply systems, proper handling of hazardous material, and containment of medical waste.

Knowledge and skills of standardized patient care for patients being anesthetized to position patients for special procedures performed by anesthesia staff; recognize and report gross changes in patient's vital signs, symptoms and general physical condition.

Skill in operating advanced medical equipment such as cardiac monitors, hemodynamics monitors, and the like, so as to recognize and correct equipment malfunctions.

Ability to make timely and accurate decisions, emphasize logic in decision-making and retain composure in stressful situations.

Ability to listen, speak, write effectively and demonstrate customer service skills to achieve customer-focused performance.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid work on the same basis as for paid experience. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. To receive credit for such experience you must indicate clearly the nature of the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the number of hours per week spent in such employment.

Foreign Education: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show that the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT/OTHER SIGNIFICANT FACTS :
Must obtain and maintain an appropriate security clearance.

May occasionally require travel away from the normal duty station and travel on military and/or commercial aircraft.

Overtime may be required.

May be required to perform other duties in support of extended mission requirements based on the scope of the squadron mission during times of conflict or staffing shortages.

May be required to perform duties in support of the READY program.

In addition, may perform escort duties, ID checks, and other related duties as required.

Certification from the Liaison Council on Certification for the Surgical Technologist (CST) and/or International Association of Healthcare Central Supply Material Management (IAHCSMM) and/or The National Institute for the Certification of Healthcare Sterile Processing and Distribution Personnel (NICHSPD) are highly desirable but not required for recruitment/appointment. Successful candidate will be required to sign upon hire a Condition of Employment stating that certification will be obtained within the established timeline as stated in the Condition of Employment. Failure to meet the timeline could result in separation from the position.

This is a designated drug testing position. The employee is subject to random drug testing.

Incumbent may be required to work an uncommon tour of duty.

Incumbent will be required to work shift work and may be required to wear a beeper on a rotating schedule.

When wearing the beeper, the incumbent will be subject to on call duty. Rotates all shifts, weekends and holidays and subject to on-call status when required.

Assistant Equipment Custodian and Environment of Care, OR Services, ensuring availability, functionality and accountability of all equipment assigned to the OR Services Flights.

Assistant Facility Manager ensuring maintenance of facilities and space assigned to the Surgical Service Flight.

Provide on the job training for new contractor paraprofessionals in accordance with established procedures and practices.
